The VVT-i system is a technology developed by the Japanese brand Toyota, this system consists of an engine with an intelligent variable valve timing system allowing the valve timing to be adjusted, generating variations in the opening time, to optimize consumption, torque and engine power delivery, as well as reducing polluting emissions, both at low and high revolutions.
How does it work?
This Toyota VVT-i system replaces its original version, which used a two-stage hydraulic variable valve timing system. The VVT-i system incorporates electronic control via an electronic control unit and hydraulic actuators that receive electronic signals that adjust the position of the intake camshaft. When the engine requires more power, the system adjusts the intake valve opening time to provide greater air and fuel flow. Conversely, when fuel efficiency is needed, the system adjusts the valve closing time to restrict the amount of air and fuel entering the combustion chamber.
How the system has evolved
Engines with the Dual VVT-i system have emerged, which controls the opening timing not only of the intake valves but also the exhaust valves. The VVTL-i system has also emerged, which controls not only valve opening timing but also valve lift.
Advantages of VVT-i engines
VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) engines offer several advantages over conventional engines that don’t incorporate this technology. Some of the main advantages are:
- Improved engine performance: VVT-i technology adjusts valve timing in real time, optimizing intake and exhaust according to engine conditions. This results in a more agile response at all operating conditions.
- Increased fuel efficiency: By adjusting the timing of valve opening and closing, the engine can operate more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption under different driving conditions..
- Emission reduction: Optimizing the combustion process through VVT-i helps reduce polluting gas emissions, contributing to a reduction in the carbon footprint and protecting the environment.
- Better performance across different rev ranges: The technology allows the engine to operate efficiently at both low and high revs, improving versatility and the driving experience. Unlike conventional engines that do not optimize torque and power delivery across different rev ranges.
- Greater durability and less wear: By operating more efficiently and smoothly, engines with VVT-i tend to have a longer lifespan and less component wear over time.
In short, VVT-i engines provide a combination of increased power, efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and a smoother driving experience compared to engines without this technology.
What other brands use the VVT-i system?
Currently, there are vehicles from brands other than Toyota that also use the VVT-i system, such as Suzuki, Kia, Hyundai, Great Wall, Lifan, and Jac, among many others.
