What is the PCV valve?
The PCV valve (Crankcase Ventilation Control Valve) is used to allow and regulate the passage of vapors produced in the crankcase by the action of the pistons and the temperature generated inside the engine.
What is its function?
By allowing oil vapors entering the intake to pass through for recombustion, it relieves vapor pressure inside the engine and also reduces pollutant emissions. The PCV valve, with its unidirectional flow, only allows oil vapors to enter the intake and prevents air or gases from entering the crankcase.
By reducing internal pressure, the PCV valve allows the engine to perform better and prevents internal pressure from bursting seals and gaskets.
How to keep your PCV valve in good condition
The PCV valve must be maintained, as its operation is vitally important in every driving cycle. There are two good and effective methods for cleaning the PCV valve: the first is by spraying carburetor cleaner and then drying it to remove any liquid residue from the cleaner inside; the second is by using compressed air to clean the valve interior. When performing cleaning and maintenance, the valve connection hose, its clamp, and the valve itself must be inspected for leaks or cracks that could impede proper operation.
How to Identify a Bad PCV Valve
When the PCV valve is failing, it can generate several characteristic symptoms, which I will list below:
1) Low rpm idling or rough idling
2) The engine stalls suddenly
3) Traces of oil in the air filter
4) Loss of power
5) Increased emissions
6) Decreased throttle response
