Corrosion or rust is an enemy of your motorcycle, ultimately damaging its metal parts. If you live in humid areas or in a coastal city, your motorcycle will be more exposed to corrosion. There are certain measures and products that can help protect it against this problem.
1- Regular Cleaning
Wash your motorcycle regularly to remove dirt, soil, and salts that can cause corrosion in metals. Use water and mild soap, and be sure to dry it thoroughly afterward.
2- Apply Wax
Apply wax to the paint and metal parts. This provides a protective barrier against moisture and contaminants, preventing them from weakening the paint and the anti-corrosion layer beneath it.
3- Corrosion protectors
There are specific products for corrosion protection on exposed metal parts. These products form a protective film that helps prevent rust. You can find products from the Rust Oleum brand or corrosion inhibitors from WD40 or the well-known 3M brand.
4- Proper storage
If you don’t have enough time to apply products to your motorcycle, it’s recommended to store it in a covered, dry location. If it must be parked outdoors, consider using a waterproof, breathable cover to prevent moisture buildup, which could cause rust even when covered.
5- Lubrication of the drive kit
If the drivetrain, which consists of the chain, sprocket, and chainring, is properly greased or lubricated, this will prevent rust from forming on these components, prolonging their lifespan and ensuring safer driving.
How do I remove rust if my motorcycle is already rusty?
If your motorcycle already has visible rust, you still have time to take action. Here are some tips to remove it or prevent its spread.
1- Apply Vinegar
Vinegar contains acetic acid, an acid that has properties that allow it to dissolve rust. Apply vinegar to the affected areas and let it sit for an hour, then use a soft-bristled brush or sponge to remove the residue.
2- Apply Coca-Cola
The advice to apply Coca-Cola to remove rust is very popular, but is it effective? Cola drinks contain phosphoric acid in their formulation, which helps dissolve rust. However, due to the high sugar content, applying Coca-Cola and letting it sit will leave the treated surfaces sticky, which can make it difficult to remove.
3- Use fine sandpaper for metals
A fine-grit sandpaper for metals can be a good option for removing rust if the area to be treated is larger, although if the piece is chrome, this could cause scratches in areas not affected by rust.
Important:
You should keep in mind that once the rust is removed, you should consider repainting the treated surface or, if it’s a chrome piece, applying some wax or metal protection product to prevent corrosion.
